ILRIS HD LASER SCANNER

ILRIS HD LASER SCANNER Technology: Our researchers are using laser-scanning technology to investigate both clastic and carbonate systems and are finding that Optech's lidar (light detection and ranging) system is a valuable tool for characterizing outcrops rapidly and quantitatively.

Outcrop faces are now placed readily into navigable 3-D volumes that can be examined immediately in the field and later interpreted on a workstation or PC. The high-resolution digital terrain models are draped with conventional photographs and corendered with attributes, such as a weathering profile (shape), laser intensity (reflectivity), and multispectral data, producing greatly enhanced data sets for examination.

All these data are then combined within the Gocad (Paradigm Geophysical Software)integration environment, and fine-scale geologic models are the outcome. Clastic research has focused on deepwater reservoir analogs. In the world there have acquired surveys from coastal California, northern and southern Spain, and southern Chile. Carbonate outcrops include the Permian of West Texas, the Cretaceous of Central Texas, and the Jurassic of Saudi Arabia.

We are pioneering in LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems to be a valuable tool in the rapid, quantitative characterization of outcrop geology. Recent advances in acquisition technology, data handling, data merging, and visualization provide a superior method of outcrop data capture and analysis when compared with traditional photograph-based methods. Outcrop faces are now readily placed into navigable 3-D volumes that can be examined immediately in the field and later interpreted on a workstation or PC. The high-resolution digital terrain models are draped with conventional photographs and co-rendered with attributes such as weathering profile (shape), and intensity (reflectivity), producing greatly enhanced data set for examination.

The Optech Ilris HD system was released in spring of 2009 and has not yet been deployed (currently being manufactured). Both systems can be used to generate models of fracture networks, geospatial representations of outcrops, photo texture digital surface models, digital elevation models, NURBS models, models of intensity response. The data and models can also be ported into a variety of 3D modeling environments including ArcGIS, Fleder Maus, GOCAD, Microstation, etc.

From our experience in working with natural outcrops rock tends to have a reflective intensity from 10-35% of beam strength depending on color, range, and atmospheric conditions. The Optech Ilris 36D ER system has a functional range under these conditions of about 4-700 meters, beyond that range, the spot size is too big for many high resolution application. The instrument can produce low-resolution models at ranges up to about 1400 meters on a clear day. Most of our work seeks model resolutions of 1-25 cm. Most of geologic work seeks to interpret fracture orientation, fracture

Saudi Geophysical Consulting, offers a range of training opportunities in topics of lidar data acquisition and modeling, and seismic interpretation. Specific class topics can be generated upon request and fulfilled by subcontract, industry affiliate, or a member of the company. Specific currently available classes include:

1) Lidar Related
a. Data acquisition and basic processing
b. Introduction to Geospatial modeling
c. Data processing with Polyworks

2) Petroleum Related
a. Shale and Salt Diapirsm
b. Intrabasinal Tectonics
c. Transcurrent brittle deformation
d. Petroleum geology for non-geologists

Additional classes can be offered but require a formal scope of learning request. Prices are negotiable. Visualization Options Lidar data can be visualized in a range of software and hardware environments. The resolution of visualization models depends upon display system operating system, video capabilities, etc. Common low-resolution options include web-based mark-up languages, Adobe Acrobat 3D, Wire Fusion, Fleder Maus, and Arc Scene. Common high-resolution options include Polyworks Viewer (free from Innovmetric), GOCAD, Vulcan, Microstation, etc. Some of these environments permit the display of different types of graphics along with 3D datasets, these include ArcScene, GOCAD, and Fleder Maus. Other options are available but are not commonly used in the academic or petroleum industry environments.
